2006 Conference

The Tony McNaughton Award was presented to Lydia Thomas from Vanderhoof. Lydia and her two young children had kindly provided support and hospitality to two travelers who had been stranded in her community over the holiday season. During the night the couple started fighting, Lydia confronted them they settled down only to start up again later. The fight escalated and the women was stabbed. Lydia spent the remainder of the night diffusing the man’s rage, protecting her children and trying to keep the women alive. Lydia finally convinced the man to allow her to call an ambulance and was able to alert the police when the ambulance arrived. RCMP Colleen Erikson arrived and together with Lydia were able to get free and arrest the man.

Lydia's children were also honored by BCYSTH Children Who Witness Coordinator and program for their presence and bravery.

Alayne's husband, Rob Hamilton and her son, James Hamilton received a copy of the award in honour of Alayne Hamilton.
